Graduates | Nomination Process | 2007 Photos The Regents' Academy is a collaborative program of the Nevada Systems of Higher Education. Started in 2006, the annual program brings together faculty from the system's seven sister institutions for two full days of study and collegial conversation about teaching. Modeled after a similar, highly successful ongoing program through the University of Missouri System, the Regents' Academy involves junior, full-time faculty in a retreat setting to learn to teach "smarter" and more efficiently, so that they can devote the necessary attention and time to scholarly activities. The Regents' Academy is predicated on the assumption that tenure-track junior faculty want and need to identify ways by which to balance the competing demands of teaching and scholarship. Learning to teach more effectively also means teaching more efficiently. Participants will review and apply research on teaching and learning; they will find out how to use a variety of teaching methods, assessment/evaluation approaches, technology, and other tools. Without critical reflection and analysis, faculty members tend to teach as they were taught; yet these may not be the most effective ways for many of their students. Working with colleagues from across the disciplines and from sister campuses helps faculty forge teaching and research alliances that will be useful in their professional development. The Regents' Academy is held at Lake Tahoe and Mt. Charleston at alternate years, Thursday through Saturday, the week following Memorial Day. Deans and chairpersons are invited to nominate full-time faculty who are on the tenure track, with 1-4 years of teaching experience. Selected individuals might be faculty who:
The program is underwritten collaboratively by the Provost, the System and private donors. Participants incur no cost.
